You’re Wrong About A Lot of Your Social, Religious, and Political Views

And so am I — so we need to all calm down!

You’re wrong.

I can say that with utter certainty.

You are wrong. Really, truly wrong. And not just about a little thing here or there. You are objectively, factually incorrect or off base about a lot of things. The sooner you realize that, the better.

Now, before you get offended…

What I say about you is equally true for me.

You and I are both wrong about a lot of things.

It’s part of being human.

We misjudge people. Misremember facts. Fall for groupthink. Trust the wrong sources. Dismiss the right ones. We confuse feelings with evidence. We confuse subjective truth with objective truth. And even when we strive for objective truth, we filter that pursuit through our upbringing, our experiences, our pain, our politics, and our tribe.

And yet… we argue like we’ve got it all figured out.

We don’t.

This doesn’t mean we should embrace postmodernism or relativism. Perish the thought! Truth exists and it is objective, and we can indeed know some of what is true, but…
