Who Created God?

Back in 2014, I was part of a live online discussion that followed in real time a famous debate between Bill Nye and Ken Ham. Their topic was Creation.

Everyone in the discussion was mocking Ham. Being the only evangelical Christian in the mix, I decided to press a bit. If they didn’t want to believe in the literal six-day Creationist theory embraced by Ham’s Answers in Genesis organization… okay. But can we agree, at least, that the universe in which we currently reside began to exist at one time? And, as such, the universe requires a cause? Can we at least agree on that? I asked.

After being ignored by most of the participants, one person smugly decided to at least give my question token attention. He asked: “Fine, I’ll bite. Who created God?”

And I quickly realized that, as is often the case with belligerent anti-Christians, this person had no credible basis (intellectually speaking) upon which to base his smugness.

Being in ministry and having an interest in Christian theology and apologetics, I was all too familiar with what too many atheists and agnostics consider a “gotcha” question. They believe this question effectively obliterates Christianity — or, for that matter, monotheism in…
