When it Comes to Religion, You CAN Believe in Truth and Freedom at the Same Time

…and you should!

As a general rule, human beings want to be loved, accepted, and not judged. Not surprisingly then, things can get sensitive and contentious very quickly when talk turns to religion.

I wish it weren’t so.

I wish everyone was mentally and emotionally healthy enough to talk about religion, politics, and the most contentious of issues without yelling at or hating one another.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.

When it comes to religion, you’re not just talking about ideology. You’re talking about core meaning-of-life issues. And you’re talking about how-we-should-live issues. Not just that, but how-we-should-think issues.

The very nature of religion involves making truth claims and making judgments.

No one likes being judged.

No one.

Hence, the dilemma.

Religion, by its nature, makes judgments — and can be very divisive.

But it doesn’t have to be.

At least it doesn’t have to be as divisive as we make it. Not if we approach it with personal humility, love for others, and respect for each person’s freedom of…
