What If God Is Real? I Used ChatGPT and Suno AI to Create a Worship Song That Answers That
And it’s pretty good!
I love music. I wish I could write music, but I can’t. Or at least I’ve not learned and practiced that skill.
Enter AI.
Disclaimer: Please note that, while this article is written entirely by a human being (yours truly), it does include AI-generated music lyrics.
I know. I know. Using AI to generate music isn’t the same as using one’s creative mind and practiced talent. I know that. And so I want to shout out to all musicians, songwriters, and recording artists who produce music the ‘old-fashioned way.’ My proverbial hat is off to you, and thank you for blessing our world with your gifts and creativity.
With that sincere disclaimer understood, let me share how I, as a musically interested but untrained songwriter, used ChatGPT and Suno AI to generate what I think is a pretty good Christian worship song.
It started with a thought
If some things are true, then those truths point to, necessitate, or lead to other truths. That’s how reality works. Well…
If God is real, that means some other things are true.
Here on Medium, there are a lot of vocal skeptics and critics who push back against any assertion that God may be real. Some of them are downright angry and belligerent in their denials and pushback.
There are also quite a few people who have an immediate, knee-jerk, and hostile reaction to any favorable mention of (or use of) generative AI.
If this article gets any notice, I expect to see angry voices from both camps swoop into the comments.
But…
For those of you who are a little more open-minded and might appreciate my experiment, it all started with a thought, namely…
If God is real, what does that mean? What other things are true if God’s existence is true?
Now, in truth, this is a concept I’ve been writing about for a while. But, today, I decided to put the thought into music.
Generating the Lyrics
To write a song, you need words — i.e., lyrics. I’m not a poet or a songwriter, so I turned to ChatGPT for help. I gave ChatGPT this prompt…
I want to create a song titled “If God is Real,” and I want each verse to emphasize something that is true if God is real. One verse should argue that if God is real, you are not alone. Another should declare if God is real, life has meaning. And then if God is real, miracles are possible and prayer can be powerful. And then close with…if God is real, no relationship is more important so seek His face and draw close to Him. I want you to craft those verses with appropriate bridges. And then a short prompt that tells Suno the style. Powerful, cinematic, inspiring, pop-rock, CCM like Hillsong and Elevation.
ChatGPT gave me some lyrics. I adjusted them a little, and this is the final product…
[Verse 1 — You Are Not Alone]
If God is real, then you are not alone
Through every fire, every storm
You can be in arms stronger than your own
There’s a presence in the silence,
A voice that calls you toward home
[Bridge 1]
Even in the shadows, even in the fear
He’s closer than your heartbeat
He’s always near
[Verse 2 — Life Has Meaning]
If God is real, then this life isn’t chance
You were made with purpose,
Not some random dance
Every breath is sacred, every soul designed
There’s a reason you are breathing
And it’s not just passing time
[Bridge 2]
You were crafted for a story
Woven by His hand
A masterpiece of glory
Part of heaven’s plan
[Verse 3 — Miracles & Prayer]
If God is real, then mountains still can move
And prayer is more than wishful thinking too
The broken can be healed, the lost can find their way
Because His power isn’t fiction
It’s alive and around us today
[Bridge 3]
Lift your eyes with hope again
Faith can rise like fire
Chains are falling at His name
He still answers from the sky
[Verse 4 — Seek His Face]
If God is real, then no love is more true
No treasure more lasting
No calling more for you
So seek His face, let your soul draw near
The King of all creation
Wants to meet you here
[Outro / Tag]
If God is real…
What else could matter more?
Open wide your heart
And give it to Him
Generating the Music
Time to go to Suno AI. That’s the program I use to generate music. ChapGPT initially gave me this prompt to use in Suno for the music style…
Create a powerful, cinematic CCM song titled “If God Is Real,” in the style of Hillsong Worship or Elevation Worship. Instrumentation should include emotional piano, ambient pads, electric guitar swells, and a soaring pop-rock build with drums and vocal harmonies. The song should be inspiring, faith-building, and filled with awe. Theme: exploring what’s true if God exists — including divine presence, meaning, miracles, and intimacy with God. Emotional arc should build from gentle reflection to passionate declaration.
But Suno flagged it because I referred to Hillsong and Elevation. So, I changed the prompt to…
Create a powerful and emotionally stirring contemporary worship song titled “If God Is Real.” The style should blend cinematic pop-rock with atmospheric worship elements. Begin softly with ambient pads and gentle piano, then build gradually into a soaring chorus with dynamic drums, electric guitar swells, and layered vocal harmonies. The tone should be awe-inspiring, reflective, and faith-filled — evoking deep emotion and a sense of reverence. Lyrically, the song should explore the implications of God’s existence: that we are not alone, life has meaning, miracles are possible, prayer is powerful, and no relationship is more important than knowing Him.
The Final Product
Suno gave me several outputs, and I chose what I think is the best and generated a video version of it. Suno produces simple vertical lyric videos that (in my opinion) aren’t the best quality. So…
I took what Suno gave me and then used Camtasia 2024 to put it against a 16x9 horizontal image generated in MidJourney.
Then, I put it on my pastoral YouTube channel.
For the thumbnail, I used Ideogram.
Here is the final product…
If I ditched the Suno-generated video and instead just used the mp3 file from Suno and then did captions/lyrics through another program (Adobe perhaps?), the quality would be better. But I didn’t have that kind of time, so I went with the simplest and quickest…even though the quality is less.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
