We Can’t Just Accept School Shootings
Our children need thoughts and prayers — and action
I woke up this morning to the news that there was yet another school shooting in our country. This time at Evergreen High School about thirty miles from Denver, Colorado. There, a student at the high school shot two other students before turning the gun on himself. You can read about this tragedy here.
This, of course, follows the deadly school shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to Education Week, there have been nine school shootings so far in 2025 that have resulted in deaths or injuries.
This is something that a civilized society should not accept.
After each school shooting, there is often mockery online against the sentiment of “thoughts and prayers.” Our society should not accept that either. Our society needs more thoughts and prayers, not less.
But…we need more than that. We need action. Our school children need action. Our kids should feel safe in school.
When I was a school kid in the 1970s and 80s, I never even contemplated a school shooting. It never crossed my mind. Fire? Sure. We had frequent fire drills, but never a shooting drill.
