Turns Out We Really Do Need the Sixth Commandment

When I was a kid, I learned the Ten Commandments. I remember, when I first heard the Sixth Commandment, my thought was “Of course.” Didn’t seem that profound to me.

Well…

What I’ve seen in the news and read on social media has shown me just how necessary that commandment is.

“Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13, KJV)

By now, anyone who has spent any time watching the news or surfing the Internet knows about the targeted assassination of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthCare, the insurance arm of UnitedHealth Group.

What I want to address is the fact that apparently hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Americans are either cheering this murder or at least celebrating the message it sends to the executives and institutions that make up our very flawed health insurance system.

As someone with a special needs sister as well as a mother who (up until her passing) wrestled with a host of health ailments —along with doctors and insurance companies — I’m not without empathy. And I’m not defending America’s health care or health insurance system. But…
