For most of American history, schools — at all levels — served up a generally positive view of the origins of the United States and the men we know as the Founding Fathers. This began to change in the 20th century.
Many college and university history programs in the 20th and certainly 21st centuries took up a more critical view of the Founding Fathers, particularly focusing on their involvement with slavery and their failure to fully align their actions with the ideals of liberty and equality.
Count me among those who believe we should teach the messy truth of history, with all its complexities and nuances. We should teach the good, the bad, and the complicated.
