The earliest Christian writer was James. That is the first epistle circulated in the first century. It is the oldest book in the New Testament. He doesn’t call for the annihilation of religion. He calls for true and undefiled religion.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

Reform? Yes. Annihilation? No.
