If you want to live a healthy, vibrant life, take responsibility for your life. And that means, to the extent you are able, carry your own burdens.

When I speak of “burdens,” I’m talking about the weight of relationships, responsibilities, anxieties, stress, setbacks, grief, challenges, choices, and more.

It’s your life. And if you want to keep it that way…

You must carry your burdens.

Other people have their own challenges, situations, and troubles. They can’t live your life for you. You must live your life.

Hold on, doesn’t the Bible say we’re supposed to carry one another’s burdens?

The Bible indeed teaches that God’s people should encourage each other, be kind to one another, and attend to the needs of the poor and vulnerable. And the New Testament has a lot to say about the church caring for those within its midst and those in the community.

We have the story of the Good Samaritan, which Jesus told in the context of loving your neighbor. And we also have Paul telling the church in Galatia:

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ…
