How to make constructive discourse impossible

The comment in the title came at me recently from a rather ungracious person who objected to one of my recent articles. This person harshly condemned “fundamentalists” (and me) for their ignorance and sanctimony — never once pausing to see these very same characteristics in their own assumptions and allegations.

And it’s a perfect (albeit sad) example of how to ruin discourse.

Even though I would prefer to write on different matters, I am often moved to respond to the numerous anti-Christian screeds and rants here on Medium. (There are many). There is a lot of animosity — and outright hatred — toward Christians personally and Christianity in general. It’s not healthy. And it needs to be called out.

A case in point is this person’s assumption that anyone who disagrees with them is unreasonable and ignorant. Again, a great way to ruin discourse and make constructive conversations all but impossible.

Specifically, this person charged me (and others like me) as believing the Bible simply because it was “pounded” into us. To this person (and many others), Bible-believing Christians blindly follow the Bible without any…
