Not Everyone Who Disagrees With You Is Attacking You

Calm down. Seriously.

Some people can’t handle any disagreement. And this isn’t just my opinion. It’s a widespread concern. According to the Pew Research Center, over 60% of Americans say that people being too easily offended is a major problem in our society.

This is something I see all the time. Online and in person. People are more easily triggered than ever before. And people often can’t handle any pushback on their views, opinions, or feelings.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath.

This situation is not healthy for the easily offended. It’s not healthy for society overall.

I don’t write this from a pedestal. I can get defensive myself. Some of you have seen that in the comments on my articles. :-)

But something has clearly changed in recent years, and not for the better.

We cannot build a healthy, functioning culture if people treat every disagreement as an attack and every challenge as trauma.

It’s okay to be challenged.

And it’s okay for someone to push back on what you say without it being an existential threat to your identity, safety, or sense of self-worth.
