My position is that Washington should be seen as a flawed hero. And all heroes (other than Jesus) are flawed.
I have no problem with teaching those flaws. I do have a problem with focusing on the flaws and leaving people with the impression that Washington was the sum total of his flaws, and I do absolutely believe that's where the pendulum has swung today in most part of the country when it comes to academia.
As for my feelings on being woke, it's complicated. I assure you that I support the original idea of woke-ism as it was understood by most people when the term started. We should be aware of injustice and the suffering of others. We should be aware of the bad in our history as well as the good. I'm all on board with that.
I'm NOT on board with where I see wokeism and progressivism today. I don't mean to offend when I write that, but that's how I feel.
