For most of my life, I’ve enjoyed watching debates. As a high schooler, I watched Congress on C-SPAN (this was before the Internet, but Cable TV was a new thing). As a university student, I was on the Debate Team. Throughout my adult years, I’ve enjoyed following the news, reading about issues and ideas, watching political debates, and now taking in TED Talks and watching podcast debates and interviews.

I enjoy ideas. I enjoy debating ideas. I enjoy learning and looking for solutions to the problems in our lives and in our society.

But…

Today, I hate politics.

And I often dislike even coming on Medium.

When I discovered Medium years ago, I thought it was awesome. I loved how so many talented and intelligent writers came on to share ideas and perspectives. I wanted to be a part of that — as a reader (mainly) and as a writer.

Now, at least when it comes to politics and religion…

Medium is full of rage and bitterness. And the algorithm seems to reward that. Medium has become just another online platform that trafficks in the unhealthy and toxic discourse that’s ruining our country.
