It is worth noting that not everything recorded IN the Bible is endorsed BY the Bible.

For example, Solomon indeed had 700 wives and 300 concubines, but this was in clear violation of the Law of Moses (see Deuteronomy 17).

I don't question the fact that the Bible can be messy (just as life is messy), but let's avoid assuming everything that happened in Bible times was in keeping with God's desires. The Bible itself is clear that was not the case.
