Do you believe in American exceptionalism? That’s a controversial term these days — American exceptionalism. Of course, it means different things to different people. So, let me clarify my terms.

I reject any form of arrogant blood-and-soil nationalism. Citizens of the United States of America are not better than citizens of other countries.

Nevertheless, when you compare systems of government…

The United States of America does have something that makes us stick out from the other nations of the world. We have the longest-serving written constitution in world history.

In that sense, the United States is…literally…exceptional.

This doesn’t make Americans better than anyone else in the world. But it does mean that Americans (especially on this Constitution Day) should be grateful for our Constitution — and the stability and success it has given our country.
