Is it fair to lump all Americans who consider themselves "evangelical" in with "the hate-filled, bile-spouting" that characterizes too much of today's "American evangelicalism"?

I find it sad that a word -- "evangelical" -- which used to mean something good has become associated with politics and poison. :-(
