Tim Denning says people don’t care about your thoughts and prayers. He says such expressions are “fake” and empty. While I appreciate some of where Tim is coming from, let me say unequivocally:

We need more thinking and praying — not less.

Let me be clear: I enjoy Tim Denning’s articles. And I have nothing but respect for him as a writer. In fact, if you’re one of the few people on Medium not following Tim, you’re missing out.

On this point, however, Tim and I disagree.

In an otherwise fantastic Medium story, Tim Denning categorizes expressions of “thoughts and prayers” as “fake messages.” He writes:

A major event happens, and many fake business leaders post a “thoughts and prayers” message that takes 30 seconds to write.

We’re all sick of it.

People care about what you do, not what you say. If you care about a tragedy, then do something about it. Create change. Introduce new policies. Or, god forbid, donating to the cause you “say” is so important.

First, let me say that Tim’s article is outstanding. Except for his comments on thoughts and prayers, I agreed with pretty much all of it! And I encourage you to…
