If God Is Real, Miracles Are Possible

And even skeptics should stay humble about this fact

Do miracles happen? Many people say no. They believe that miracles are effectively impossible. Yes, we can have unexplained phenomena. Yes, there are events or episodes that we don’t understand. But miracles? There’s no such thing. So say the anti-miracle folks, that is.

Merriam-Webster defines a miracle as “an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs” or “an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment.”

Most people (including skeptics, agnostics, and atheists) will grant the second definition but push back against the first. My contention is that both definitions are accurate.

In some cases, there can be an “unusual event, thing, or accomplishment” that may or may not be attributed to natural causes (however improbable) and that we may never be able to explain. But…

In other cases, the best explanation for “an extraordinary event” is indeed the manifestation of “divine intervention in human affairs.”

And therein lies the rub.

There are many people today (including here on Medium) who completely reject even the possibility of divine intervention, simply because they don’t believe in the…
