I certainly understand, respect, and (often times) agree with Gandhi's famous statement: "I like your Christ, but not your Christians." So, I don't mean to side-step or downplay or deny the fact that many people who profess the Name of Christ do really bad, hurtful, sometimes horrible things.
But, yes, part of my solution to that is to encourage people of faith to keep their focus on Christ more so than other Christians. Christ is our example and our standard.
And I do encourage everyone -- people of faith or people without faith in God -- to "do good things." That's something all of us should strive for.
I also just want to offer a word of caution (and I'll probably write more on this) to everyone deconstructing their faith and publicly encouraging others to do the same...
I'm all for disassembling one's beliefs to better examine them. I think that falls under Paul's "test all things" admonition in I Thessalonians 5.
But we've done a lot of deconstructing in recent years and not a lot of building. And I think we're seeing the consequences of that play out.
It's one thing to push back against people's pride, arrogance, and aggressiveness. It's another to chop at people's proverbial faith tree when those people aren't causing you (or others) any harm.
Just my two cents.
