I applaud your servant's heart, locke besse, and all you've done to help people. That is the most important thing I wish to say.

You wrote: "Anytime I point out that the Bible is not the inerrant word of God, but was written for the most part by a bunch of ignorant men a long time ago in a different culture with different rules and a different understanding of the universe, I get a lot of pushback."

Obviously, I have a lot to say on this. :-)

First, "pushback" isn't always hateful or wrong. Progressives remind me of this all the time when I defend the excess hate often directed against Bible-believing Christians. Well, if that's the case, then it works both ways. When Bible-believing Christians push back (even passionately) against words, beliefs, or actions contrary to biblical teaching... that is not necessarily a bad thing.

That being said... I fully accept that many Christians "push back" in ways that ARE bad and harmful. But not ALL push-back is inappropriate.

Second, we today -- you, me, every other human being on planet Earth - are also "ignorant." People who lived long ago don't have a monopoly on ignorance and they were, in fact, a whole lot wiser and more accomplished than today's generations often give credit. Too often we are guilty of what C.S. Lewis called "chronological snobbery."

Third, you're right that the books of the Bible were written in "different culture with different rules and a different understanding of the universe." And it's critical everyone keeps this in mind when studying these ancient texts. But...

God is not "ignorant" and God is not hampered or relativized by "different cultures with different rules and a different undertanding of the universe." God transcends all of that. Therefore...

Is God capable of communicating timeless principles through a set of sacred writings that were produced a long time ago?

I believe the answer is yes.

If we disagree, that's okay. I believe in the freedom of religion. But...

I do believe in a real, supernatural God who is capable of miracles -- including an inerrant Bible.
