Wait! Hitler was a…what?!

Okay, bear with me. I want to show how typical discourse goes these days, especially online, when it comes to history, politics, and religion. For our example, we’ll look at history…

Person A: “Adolf Hitler was evil. Did you know he was a cannibal?”

Person B: “Ummm… there is no credible evidence that Adolf Hitler was a cannibal.”

Person A: “You Nazi Bigot! How can you defend a monster like Adolf Hitler!?”

And THAT, my dear reader, sums up the quality of online discourse today.

Hold on, you might say, I’ve never seen anyone claim online that Hitler was a cannibal. I haven’t either, but you’re missing my point.

I’m using the above imaginary back-and-forth to illustrate the quality (or lack thereof) of typical online discourse these days. Discourse that goes something like…

  • Person A makes an outrageous claim about Donald Trump.
  • Person B cautions that this outrageous claim is unproven.
  • Person A then accuses Person B of being a Trump supporter — even though this may not be the case at all.

Or…

  • Person A posts a link to an article
