If you are a citizen of the United States of America, then today (July 2) is your nation’s birthday.

Don’t believe me?

Well…

It was on July 2, 1776, that the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution from Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee which read:

“That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”

The next day (July 3), John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail to report the news and predicted that “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.” Adams wrote:
