My dad was a huge C.S. Lewis fan. But Dad passed away before I fully understood why. Today, I most certainly do understand. I’ve become quite the C.S. Lewis fan myself.

C.S. Lewis was born 126 years ago today — November 29, 1898. Lewis was not only a brilliant scholar and author but also a man whose faith and imagination have inspired generations. Through works like Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis combined intellectual rigor with storytelling, making complex philosophical and theological truths accessible to millions.

My first introduction to Lewis was Dad encouraging me as a kid to read The Chronicles of Narnia — something I (sadly) didn’t do until my adult years, well after Dad’s passing. Dad also encouraged me to read Mere Christianity. I started to read it during my college years but struggled to get past the first chapter.

Sometime after becoming a pastor, I decided to give Lewis another shot. I had long appreciated the Lewis quotes making their way around the Internet. I decided to actually read the books! My favorites include:

  • Mere Christianity (of course)
  • The Screwtape Letters
  • The Abolition of Man
  • The Problem of Pain
  • A Grief Observed

Oh, and yes… The Chronicles of Narnia

Thank you, C.S. Lewis, for reminding us that, as you so beautifully put it, “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

Appreciate my writing?
