“Getting Offended is Something Privileged People Do”
True or False?
The other day, I posted a quote on Facebook from a comedian that drew a couple of likes and a couple of confusing comments. Confusing to me, that is. And the more I reflected on the comments, the more I realized my point (and that of the comedian who I was quoting) was completely missed.
The quote was from Indian comedian Vir Das. He was speaking to a Canadian audience and… well, I tell you what… here’s the clip. You can watch it for yourself.
Vir Das opens by taking a couple of shots at former President Donald Trump’s immigration policy (specifically about the “cages”). Then after joking about immigration some more, he moves into the central point that I was commenting on.
How you feel about immigration is immaterial to this article. We can discuss that later. If at all. For now, I’m focused on what he said about people being offended (which starts at about the 2:08 mark in the above video).
