Don’t Confuse Feelings With Reality

Feelings don’t determine what is true

Human beings are emotional creatures, but we jeopardize our lives and hurt others when we see ourselves, other people, and circumstances exclusively through the lens of our feelings.

Our emotions and feelings are part of who we are as human beings. Not surprisingly, they have been the subject of considerable study and debate over the centuries.

Philosophers Andrea Scarantino and Ronald de Sousa write:

No aspect of our mental life is more important to the quality and meaning of our existence than the emotions. They are what make life worth living and sometimes worth ending. So it is not surprising that most of the great classical philosophers had recognizable theories of emotions.

Unfortunately, there is no clear agreement in the academic world on how we can define emotions. Still, there can be no doubt of the following fact:

Emotions have an enormous impact on the quality of our lives.

As a general rule, the better your emotional state, the better your life. Some emotions are helpful. Some, not so much.
