Do You Enjoy GameLit or LitRPG?
Why this fantasy fiction reader loves stories set in a game world
Do you read fantasy novels? Do you enjoy playing tabletop or computer role-playing games? If so, gamelit or litrpg may be right up your alley.
What is Gamelit?
GameLit (or Game Literature) is a fantasy and science fiction sub-genre combining the conventions of gaming with science fiction and fantasy novels. This subgenre is sometimes known as LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) or RPG Lit (Role-Playing Game Literature).
This subgenre is all about following fictional characters through a (hopefully) high-immersion, virtual reality “world” — in many cases, that “world” is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).
In the last several years, I’ve become a big fan of this subgenre. My introduction to GameLit / LitRPG was author J.A. Cipriano’s World of Ruul series. Cipriano, a New York Times bestselling author, has written four installments in this series thus far — and I’ve read the first three. They are Soulstone: Awakening, Soulstone: The Skeleton King, and Soulstone: Oblivion.
I was hooked on Soulstone: Awakening, even though the language was a little rough for this Christian reader.
