Choose Gratitude Over Grievance This Thanksgiving

We have plenty to be thankful for — so let’s be thankful

Thanksgiving Week is upon us. Hard to believe how fast this year has gone. And yet, here we are.

One thing about Thanksgiving, at least here in America, is that it’s a time when we once again argue with one another over our history or topics of justice and equity. Not that we need an occasion to argue. We do that all the time now.

Sadly.

But Thanksgiving is losing its status as a holiday that once united us around themes of gratitude and faith. Like so many other holidays, it’s become a flashpoint in the Culture Wars that are tearing friends, families, and our nation apart.

Rather than focus on those things for which we have to be thankful (as we’re supposed to on Thanksgiving), too many of us instead wail and bemoan over all the things wrong in our lives or in our past.

Yes, I’m aware that there are some who (due to various reasons) are unable to celebrate Thanksgiving. Let Thanksgiving be an opportunity to remind us of those less fortunate. May we look for opportunities to pray for, encourage, and help those in need — not only on Thanksgiving but every day of the year.
