Any Adult Who Assaults a Kid Should Be Imprisoned For a Long, Long Time
A 13-year-old girl waits for justice in California
--
You may have seen the video footage of a woman savagely beating a 13-year-old girl in a Los Angeles-area McDonald’s. If not, you can click on this link.
That a grown woman would do such a thing defies reason and begs for justice. Fortunately, the police have arrested the woman. The case has now been sent to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
This is the kind of incident that should arouse universal outrage. And yet…
One of the most troubling aspects of this story is the number of people who did nothing to help this girl.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad there was video footage. This allowed the police to more quickly identify the suspect and make the arrest. Cell phones come in handy for that.
That being said…
Did everybody need to film the assault?
For that matter, not all those standing around were filming. Some were just standing around!
Finally, mercifully, one person did eventually intervene and pull the assailant away.
But this is a microcosm of what I fear society has become overall.
When it comes to injustice such as this assault, we’ve become a nation of agitators, perpetrators, complainers, and spectators.
We need people who will do more than spectate or complain.
We need more people who will (if they are able)step in and put a STOP to unprovoked and unjustified assaults like this and HELP those affected.
And, in this case, we need the California justice system to step up to the plate and do its part.
Violent aggressors, especially those who go after children, should be locked away. And if we lose the keys… well, that’s no loss.
If adults who beat children aren’t put away for a long, long time, the scales of justice are out of balance. And we shouldn’t rest until that balance is restored.
