Yesterday was my 55th birthday. I’m grateful to God and the people who have been a part of my (slightly over) half-century life on this wonderful planet. While I’m far from the brightest bulb in the lamp, I’ve picked up a few things over the years, and if you’ll indulge me…

I want to share 55 key insights, observations, truths, principles, or life lessons I’ve learned. This list is not all-inclusive of my beliefs or observations, but it’s a good picture of who I am and how I see the world.

Here is my list (in no particular order):

  1. Life isn’t about stuff. It’s about relationships.
  2. Life is short and it’s fragile.
  3. Don’t take your parents (or grandparents, aunts, uncles, or any family member) for granted. You won’t always have them with you.
  4. One thing people can’t take from you is your integrity.
  5. Tell the truth — even if it hurts.
  6. Build your life around those who will be crying at your funeral.
  7. Don’t base your self-esteem on the opinions of other people.
  8. No one is perfect. Everyone has flaws.
  9. Everyone has their own problems and challenges.
