Got opinions?

Great! So does every other human being on planet Earth.

We swim in opinions today. In previous centuries, the primary sources of opinions would have been personal conversations, books, pamphlets, and local gatherings. Today, we have the internet, television, radio, podcasts, blogs, social media platforms, and more.

Is that what we call progress?

Today, we live in the Age of Information Overload.

As well as Misinformation Overload.

And Opinion Overload.

The consequences of such remind me of these words from King Solomon:

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. (Proverbs 10:19, KJV)

We have plenty of opinions. What we need more of is wisdom.

The pursuit of wisdom, however, requires humility as well as a commitment to listening, learning, and thoughtfulness. I don’t see a lot of these qualities today.

This is definitely the case when it comes to religion, relationships, and politics. For this article, I just want to tackle the latter, although much of this pertains to other topics as well.

With this article, I want to put forward three (3) truths that are based on the testimony of some pretty wise and learned people over the ages.

I believe these truths are great starting points if you want wisdom instead of just opinions and if you want to make a positive contribution to the world instead of just adding to the noise.

Truth #1: You don’t know everything

Think you have the answers to the world’s problems? If you do, that’s a great sign you don’t.

I like what Socrates once said:

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”
