17 Bible Verses That Lay Out the Basic Tenets of True Christianity

If you want to properly understand Christianity, don’t focus on the beliefs and behavior of the professing Christians in your life. Instead, pray and read the Bible continually.

And when it comes to the Bible, you need to read all of it. Cover to cover. Genesis to Revelation. Then, go back and read it again.

And again.

And…well, you get the idea.

We live in a society characterized by poor attention spans (and it’s getting worse). Attention spans are at an all-time low.

Of course, our lack of attention and patience doesn’t stop us from having opinions. We’re always ready to give those — informed or not. Usually not.

And what brings out opinions more than sex, politics, or religion?

Answer: Nothing

For this article, we focus on the latter.

If you want to at least understand the basic, foundational essence of Christianity, I’m going to suggest seventeen (17) Bible verses to start with.

It’s important, of course, to note that it’s never a good idea to read a Bible verse in isolation. Extracting a Bible verse from the book of the Bible it’s in without any regard for context is like taking a line from an article or email — and thinking you understand the whole article or email.

Or like removing a piece from a puzzle — and then thinking you can still see the whole puzzle in just that piece!

Don’t be lazy. Don’t be impatient.

The things that are most valuable in life usually take time, focus, and energy to fully understand and appreciate.
