About seven years ago, a comment made by a colleague motivated me to change my reading habits. He asked if I had read a particular book. I said I had read parts of it but never finished it. After getting a quizzical look, I explained that I often read bits and pieces of books — but rarely finish them. His next words changed my reading life:

“I never took you for the type to not finish books.”

That got me.

I didn’t want to be that type.

In fact, in the course of my life, I had read — and finished — many books. But in my 20s, 30s, and early 40s, I had drifted away from reading books cover-to-cover. Instead, I gravitated toward articles and portions of books.

When my friend said these words to me, I purposed to do better.

And I did.

Starting in 2017, I began to set annual reading goals. And since the beginning of 2017, I’ve now read well over 500 books!

Word for word.

Cover to cover.
